NEW DELHI— Tata Motors Ltd. 500570.BY +0.90% 's net profit rose for the first time in four quarters in the July-September period, as strong performance by its Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC unit outweighed a slump in vehicle sales in its home market of India.

Consolidated profit at the Mumbai-based maker of the Nano minicar and Prima heavy-duty truck surged 71% in the three months ended Sept. 30 to 35.42 billion rupees ($564 million) from 20.74 billion rupees a year earlier. That exceeded the 27.66-billion-rupee forecast in a survey of analysts by FactSet.
Sales climbed 30% to 557.01 billion rupees.
U.K.-based Jaguar Land Rover reported a 66% increase in net profit in the fiscal second quarter at £507 million. Its sales jumped 40% to £4.61 billion.
Meanwhile, in India, Tata Motors incurred a net loss of 8.04 billion rupees in the July-September period, compared with a net profit of 8.67 billion rupees a year earlier.
Sales in India dropped 29% to 88.68 billion rupees.
Jaguar Land Rover has turned to be the savior for Tata Motors since the Mumbai-based auto maker acquired the luxury marquees from Ford Motor Co. in 2008.
